Staging Emotion: Kentucky Opera Through My Lens

Capturing performers' movement, expressions, and storytelling power of each production.

Authentic portraits and dynamic stage imagery that tells each performance's story.

When I photograph the Kentucky Opera, every moment on stage becomes an opportunity to tell a story. I’m driven by the thrill of capturing the raw expressions of the performers, the nuance in a glance, the tension in a jaw, the joy in a smile, because those details are what connect audiences to the heart of a production.

The diversity of the repertoire and the scale of the productions keep my work fresh and challenging. From intimate scenes to grand ensembles, each show demands a different approach: shaping available light, choosing the right lens to preserve atmosphere, and composing frames that reflect the director’s intent. My goal is always to create images that feel like a continuation of the performance, photographs that carry the emotion, pacing, and narrative arc you experienced in the theater.

Capturing movement is central to my approach. I anticipate crescendos and gestures, freeze decisive moments of motion, and use motion blur selectively to convey energy and flow. Thoughtful composition and timing allow still images to read like a sequence of moments from the story, guiding the viewer through character, conflict, and resolution.

I work respectfully and unobtrusively in the theater environment to preserve the integrity of the performance while delivering strong, evocative images that serve marketing, archival, and editorial needs. If you’d like to discuss coverage for an upcoming production or see examples of my Kentucky Opera work, I’d love to connect.
